Why does T20 cricket have 20 overs?

Let me tell you what is known. To finish a match in about 3 hours and bring in people who had not been coming. T20 began in 2003 as a domestic competition in England. No source could be found that explains why the number 20 itself was chosen.

A way to win back spectators
T20 is a format in which each team plays 20 overs. It began in 2003 as a domestic competition in England. It was thought up by Stuart Robertson, the marketing head of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). At that time, crowds at domestic matches were shrinking, and this was a worry.

Asking people who were not coming
Robertson's team looked into why the stands were empty. The people who were not coming were women, people aged 16 to 35, and families with young children. One reason was the time of the matches: people with jobs could not go to daytime games. So they asked, "Would you come to a match that takes less than 3 hours?" The answer was an overwhelming yes.
A match of about 3 hours
A 50-over match takes about 7 hours, a whole day. The middle of the innings also tended to be a dull stretch of singles. If that middle part were cut, the match would last about 3 hours and could be held on early evenings and weeknights. In 2001, representatives of the counties voted, and it was adopted by 11 votes to 7. No source was found that explains in detail why it is 20 overs, but the aim was a match of about 3 hours.
T20 spreads to India
T20 spread quickly. South Africa started a domestic competition in the winter of 2003, and Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka did so in 2005. India, which loved the 50-over game, also held a domestic T20 tournament in 2006. The first world event was held in South Africa in 2007, and India's win in it helped its popularity grow. The IPL began in 2008.
